Captain Steve Torres and Freddy have been on the tuna hunt even though it is late in the season. Captain Steve found a great boil of Yellowfin off-shore about 20 miles past the El Banco recently. It was about a 70 mile run from the Marina Vallarta.
We left the docks last Tuesday a little before 4 am and hit the fishing grounds about 7 am. Right as we approached the Island we saw a nice flock of birds and smaller tuna jumping. Captain Steve hollered, "smaller tuna jumping early means the big bite after 2 in the afternoon!" After we boated the first tuna we caught up with the school. As soon as we starting drifting again, there was another bite, then another, then one more--all about the same size: 30 -50 lbs. That got everyone’s blood pumping! We kept catching one tuna after another with one more triple hook up. By 2 pm we decided to get a little further away from the Island and try for the bigger tuna. We only moved about a mile when Captain Steve spotted more birds and suddenly we were back on top of them. All of us saw a big splash in the water behind us. This was much bigger then we had seen all day, and 5 minutes later we were hooked up again with a Yellowfin weighing about 120 lbs to top the day. Total catch for the day, eleven Yellowfin tuna; 30-60 lb range, and one about 120 lbs.
That's a great day of off-shore fishing in March for Puerto Vallarta!
